We are pleased to announce the second annual “Bert Peeters Prize for Best Student Project in NSM Semantics”. This prize is in honour of Bert Peeters, one of the pioneers of the NSM approach, who passed away in February 2021. Aside from his prolific publications, Bert dedicated much effort and enthusiasm to supporting and encouraging students and to showcasing their research. 

The winner will be awarded a $200AUD cash prize and a place at the 2024 NSM-Con (annual online conference 27-28 June 2024) to make a presentation on the research. The winning paper will be published on the site nsm-approach.net.  

About the essay 

The essay must be an original research essay by an undergraduate or Master’s student* which uses the NSM approach to semantics. It should be 2500-4000 words in length, be written in English**, and preferably include at least one original semantic explication or cultural script.  

How to submit your essay 

We invite submissions from anywhere in the world. Please submit your essay by completing the online form. In addition to completing the online form, you must submit the following documents: 

(i) a pdf copy of the essay 

(ii) a supporting letter from your lecturer (maximum 1 page) 

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 1st May 2024. Winners will be announced by the 1st June 2024. 

Applications will be assessed by a panel of 3 representatives from the NSM research community. Membership of the panel is determined on a yearly basis. 

The prize will not be awarded in a given year if none of the submissions reaches a suitable standard as determined by the panel.

*In the case of two or more authors, one must nominate as lead author for the purpose of the submission, all authors must be undergraduate or masters students, and should be credited appropriately on the project. Where a project is judged to be the winner with two or more authors, the $200AUD prize is awarded to the project as a whole and not per author.

**Where the student normally writes in a language other than English, their own translation of their work will be accepted.
